Marketing 2026: algorithms change, people don’t

Algorithms, platforms and AI are changing in 2026, yet people want what they always wanted. They look for simple things that mean something, real connections and moments worth their attention. Winning strategies start from those needs rather than from technology, because attention can’t be bought, only earned.

Marketing has spent the last few years in a constant scramble to adapt: new platforms, formats and algorithms, plus the promises of AI. TikTok rewrote the rules of cultural discovery, AI turned search into a conversation, and brands keep chasing the “next big thing”.

Yet for all that upheaval, there’s a reassuring paradox: people don’t change all that much. The best marketing decisions start from human behaviour, which stays surprisingly stable, rather than from technology. Platforms come and go, but the way people connect and give their attention follows old patterns.

So this isn’t about “trends” in the shallow sense. It’s about three human truths that can anchor your marketing strategy in 2026:

  • Simplicity and meaning. We look for experiences that are easy and still mean something.
  • Human connection. We trust people and communities, not controlled messages.
  • Earned attention. Attention is earned, not bought.

01We look for simplicity and meaning

Why faster isn’t always better

People love convenience. Nobody enjoys a fiddly checkout, a cluttered page or a search that won’t give a straight answer. Which is why AI looks like the perfect fix: conversational search, agents that do the shopping for us, zero friction.

But there’s an interesting tension here: completely frictionless experiences aren’t always the most satisfying. And search itself is changing:

  • More front doors. Search is no longer just Google but a network of front doors: social media, retail, AI assistants and apps.
  • Search Experience Optimization. Classic SEO no longer cuts it. Content has to work for people, algorithms and AI at once.
  • Clarity, not just keywords. Brands compete on clarity, usefulness and emotional context.
8%of visits led to a click on a traditional result when an AI summary appeared
15%of visits led to a click when no AI summary appeared
1%of visits led to a click on a link inside the AI summary

The figures come from a Pew Research Center study published in July 2025, which analysed the searches of 900 US adults in March 2025. When the answer comes straight from AI, being the source it cites matters more and more than being one link in the list.

Friction, in the right doses

You don’t need to get rid of friction altogether, only to dose it. Retail shows three things:

  • Scarcity. Products that are hard to find make people want them more.
  • Ritual. Exclusivity, waiting and ritual can build attachment.
  • Balance. Shopping can be efficient and memorable at the same time.

Don’t obsess over making everything faster. Optimise for experience and emotion.

02Human connection matters

For all the talk of digital isolation, people still go looking for connection: communities, interest groups, live experiences, real conversations. In 2026, influence is decentralised:

  • Small creators. They can build more authentic relationships with their audience.
  • Niche communities. They can earn more trust than the big channels.
  • Brands. They no longer control the narrative; they take part in it.

Impact matters more than reach. People put more trust in real opinions, first-hand experience and content that’s imperfect but authentic. The brands that win in 2026 are the ones that accept they don’t fully control the conversation.

03Attention is earned, not bought

Attention is scarce and getting more valuable

It’s hardly a new idea, but in 2026 it’s harder to ignore:

  • Competition. The fight for attention is turning brutal.
  • AI-generated content. It is flooding feeds and making everything look alike.
  • Costs. They keep rising while effectiveness lags behind.

The answer isn’t “more advertising”. It’s more attention, earned with creative content.

Why more media spend has stopped working

The old recipe
For years, the industry papered over a lack of impact with more reach, more frequency and bigger budgets.
The result
Ad fatigue, brand erosion and less real attention.
The alternative
Brands join in with the entertainment instead of interrupting it.

Advertising that looks like advertising gets ignored. Advertising that feels like an experience people want gets sought out. So fit into what people already want to watch, read and do.

04In short

When everything seems to be in flux, the most reliable strategic anchor turns out to be a very old one: human nature. People want:

  • Simplicity, with meaning. Easy experiences that mean something.
  • Connection. People and communities, not only content.
  • Memorable experiences. Moments that stay with them, not only messages.

Brands that build on these principles in 2026 will come out ahead.
